Well we haven't posted for a while. We got caught up in a number of other things that didn't give us time to get together for cooking.
In our adventures into learning more about our Slovenian Heritage and our search for new recipes to try, we discovered something called a "Burek". Two of us came across the word burek as we were completing our Slovenian language class homework. Burek was used in a fiction story we were reading. As we were trying to understand what the story was saying we thought burek was the name of a food stand. Later we discovered it is a food made with filo dough.
The filo pastry dough is wrapped around meat or cheese filling and shaped in a variety of ways. It can be spiraled, cigar shape, pie shape or made in a rectangle and sliced. You can also make a desert burek filled with fruit such as shredded apples with cinnamon and sugar.
For our first attempt, we chose to make two 9x13 casserole dishes of savory meat filled burek . Each pan provided 12 servings. For a side we served a salad. It does take some time to assemble and bake but it is a very good dish. Definitely something we would make again and work on perfecting the ingredients.
Below are pictures of our burek.
